THE CHEAPEST WAY TO GET TO PUERTO VIEJO, COSTA RICA (A step by step guide)

So, you’re ready to dive into the laid-back vibes of Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica? Awesome choice! If you need to know the ins and outs and like to be as prepared as possible, I get you. I am the same way and I’m here to help you navigate the journey from Costa Rica’s capital, San José, to the paradise of Puerto Viejo step-by-step. Let’s get into it..

1. Touchdown in San José, Costa Rica

First things first—fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). Be sure to not confuse this with San Jose, California’s airport (SJC). Once you’re off the plane, follow the crowd to the exit.

2. Customs & Baggage Claim

Get ready for a quick customs stop. Have your passport, hotel info, and plane ticket handy. Most of the time, you’ll breeze through without a hitch. Sometimes they might ask where you’re staying and for how long, so just be ready to chat briefly if needed. After customs, head to baggage claim and grab your bag.

3. Cash and Screening

Before you head out, pull out some Costa Rican colones. About 25,000 (roughly $50usd) should do the trick. You’ll need this for your bus ride and any other little expenses that pop up. Next, walk to the exit. You’ll need to put your bags through one last screening here.

4. Taxi Hustle: Avoid the Hype

When you step outside, you’ll be greeted by a bunch of eager taxi drivers. They might try to engage you in a conversation, but if you’re not interested, just shake your head and keep walking. Trust me, you’ll want to avoid the hassle.

PRO TIP: If they tell you there are no ubers that come to the airport, DO NOT LISTEN. In fact, do NOT mention your means of transportation. They are good at their job and they will confuse, or persuade ;), you into catching a more expensive ride with them.

5. Catching Your Uber

When you nexit the doors of the airport and make it past the taxi drivers, head across the road to the parking lot structure and walk up the ramp to the second level.

Book your Uber (destination information is in the next paragraph) and text them precise directions: “Parking lot, level 2, C.” This way, they’ll know exactly where to find you the first time around.

6. Destination: MEPE Bus Terminal Bound

Tell your Uber to drop you off at the MEP bus terminal. Here’s a handy pin to make sure you get to the right place: MEP Bus Terminal.

There are a few terminals around, so this pin will help you avoid any mix-ups.

7. Buy Your Bus Ticket

Once you arrive at the terminal, cash in hand (around 10,000 colones should be sufficient), make your way to the back corner on the left. You’ll spot some seating and a ticket window. Here, you’ll tell them you need a ticket to Puerto Viejo in caribe for the next bus. Hand over your cash and wait for your ride.

8. Stow Your Bags and Enjoy the Ride

When the bus rolls up, let the driver know you’re headed to Puerto Viejo, and they’ll help you stash your bags in the designated spot. With everything in place, sit back and relax. The bus ride is about 4 hours, so maybe catch up on a good book, enjoy the scenery, or just chill and think about the beach vibes you’re about to get into.

And there you have it folks! From touchdown in San José to the sandy shores of Puerto Viejo, you’re all set for an adventure. Enjoy the journey and get ready for some epic beach vibes! 🌊🌺

Happy travels and pura vida!
