A Guide to Medellin, Colombia

Medellín, Colombia, known as the "City of Eternal Spring," is a city nestled in Colombian mountains with vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and perfect weather. Whether you're planning a short getaway or a long-term stay, this guide will help you navigate all the essentials to make the most of your time in this captivating city.

A Perfect Climate Year-Round

Medellín’s weather is AMAZING. With temperatures consistently hovering between 70-80°F (21-27°C), it feels like spring all year. While rain is a possibility, it typically occurs during the afternoons, especially during the rainy season in October and November. The rest of the year offers sunny skies and a mild climate that’s perfect for exploring the city and its surroundings.

Communicating with the Locals

Spanish is the primary language spoken in Medellín, and while many locals are friendly and eager to help, having some tools to bridge the language gap can make a world of difference.

Download ChatGPT for better accuracy than Google Translate, and consider brushing up on basic Spanish phrases before your trip with an app like Duolingo. Additionally, using a currency exchange app will help you keep track of the conversion rate as you manage your colombian pesos.

Understanding Visa Requirements

For visitors from the United States, entering Colombia is straightforward. Upon arrival, you’re granted a 90-day tourist visa. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply online for an additional 90-day extension, giving you a total of 180 days per calendar year.

Here’s a tip: since the visa time resets every January 1st, you can maximize your stay by arriving in August, leaving in December, and returning in January to start a fresh 180 days for a total stay of 1 year.

For those looking to stay even longer, the digital nomad visa offers a 6-month to 2-year option. However, recent applications have faced higher denial rates, so be prepared with proof of income (minimum $750/month) and employment.

Navigating Your Arrival

Medellín’s main airport, José María Córdova International (MDE), is located about 45 minutes outside the city. While the distance might seem inconvenient, transportation is relatively easy.

Opt for an Uber, which costs around $30 USD (110-120K COP), and avoid taking taxis. If anyone claims there are no Ubers, don’t believe them. It’s best to mention that a “friend” is picking you up to avoid unnecessary conversations about your transportation choice.

Where to Stay in Medellín

Medellín offers a variety of neighborhoods to suit every taste and budget. El Poblado is popular among tourists for its trendy restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and upscale vibe. For a more local experience, Laureles provides a charming, laid-back atmosphere with excellent cafes and parks. Suburban areas like Envigado, Sabaneta, and Itagüi are perfect for those seeking a quieter stay while still being connected to the city.

Whether you prefer Airbnbs, boutique hotels, or hostels, Medellín has plenty of options to accommodate your needs.

Managing Money and Payments

Cash is king in Medellín, and withdrawing money from ATMs is the most convenient way to access funds. When prompted with a conversion rate at the ATM, always decline to get a better rate. For safety, limit daily withdrawals to 200K COP. Dining out is affordable, with typical meals costing around 20K COP ($6 USD). From high-end restaurants to street food vendors, you’ll find delicious options for every budget but make sure to have small change because they typically do not have change for anything over 20K COP.

Apps to Simplify Your Stay
