6 Months Living in Medellin, Colombia

A Love Letter to the City of Eternal Spring

Six months in Medellín have felt like three. That alone should tell you something about this city! Time flies when you’re surrounded by beauty, warmth, and a lifestyle that makes you question why you didn’t move here sooner.

I came with an open heart and Medellín matched my energy with friendships, adventure and a life I could see myself settling into for years to come.

Why Medellín Just Makes Sense

The People & Community

Making friends here is almost effortless. The locals are some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met—warm, inviting, and genuinely happy to share their culture with you. Whether it's a casual “hola hermosa” from a stranger or the way they call each other “amor” without hesitation, the kindness here is real. And they love kids! If you have little ones, expect them to be doted on, spoken to like tiny adults and most importantly embraced by the community.

A City Made for Kids

Speaking of little ones, Medellín is amazing for families. Parks are everywhere, activities are abundant and affordable and there’s no shortage of ways to keep kids engaged. Plus, childcare options? Solid. If you need help, you’ll find trustworthy and loving caregivers without breaking the bank.

The Outdoors & Fitness Culture

If you love being outside, Medellín will spoil you. The city is green everywhere—from lush parks to hiking trails that take you into the surrounding mountains. Fitness is big here, too. Gyms are everywhere, outdoor fitness parks are free, and Sundays are a dream with Ciclovía—when entire streets and sides of the freeways are shut down for bikers, runners, and skaters to take over.

Weather That Feels Like a Cheat Code

They don’t call it the City of Eternal Spring for nothing. The weather? Perfect. Every day feels like the best day of spring—warm but not too hot, fresh breezes, and the occasional rain to keep everything lush and vibrant.

Cost of Living & Ease of Life

You don’t need a car here. The neighborhoods are walkable, and the metro system is clean, efficient, and gets you everywhere you need to go. Activities are cheap, food is even cheaper (and bomb if you’re vegan) and there’s just so much to do without draining your bank account.

The Culture & Language

Medellín has soul. The Afro, reggaeton, and salsa music scene is HUGE so if you love dancing or want to learn, you’re in the right place. Museums, street art, and cultural events are always happening. And on the language side? The Colombian accent is one of the easiest to understand in Spanish, which has made immersive learning so much easier.

Integration: Feeling at Home in Medellín

I won’t lie—I came here knowing my Spanish comprehension was stronger than my speaking skills but it hasn’t been a barrier at all. In just six months, I’ve learned so much, and the people here make it easy. They’ll chat you up if you want, leave you be if you don’t and always make you feel like you belong.

The biggest takeaway? I’ve built a little life here. One that feels right. The kind of life I could see myself living for the next few years.

Medellín gives you a lot. Great weather, beautiful landscapes, an active lifestyle and some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. Six months in, and I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. If you’re thinking about coming, do it. You might just find yourself wanting to stay.
